It is a popular place to visit because it is only a short hike on a paved path from a parking lot. Near DeSoto State Park, there are plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities to take advantage of while you’re in the area.
Caney Creek Falls
Caney Creek Falls is accessible through a three-mile hike that descends into Caney Creek Canyon found in Winston County via the Caney Creek Trailhead. During the hot summer months, there is actually a swimming hole to enjoy below the falls. The hike can get steep, so adequate footwear is recommended. The hike is well worth the effort when you see these stunning falls.
High Falls
What High Falls lacks in height it makes up for in width. Although only 35 feet high, it is 300 feet wide. Found in High Falls Park, the falls are reached by a short hike from the parking lot. The view from the pedestrian bridge offers a great photo opportunity. The fall is home to a unique geological feature too, a natural archway that was carved from the flowing water.
Little River Falls
Little River Falls is an easily accessible waterfall found at the head of Little River Canyon near Fort Payne. This 45-foot waterfall is a great place to enjoy a picnic or a swim, as there are picnic tables here and even a swimming hole at the base of the falls. This waterfall flows year round, however, the water level is higher during the winter and spring seasons.
Noccalula Falls
Found in Noccalula Falls Park, Noccalula Falls is another easily accessible waterfall, since it can be viewed from the parking lot above the falls. To reach the base of the falls, there is a hike through Black Creek Gorge. This 90-foot waterfall is truly a natural beauty. While you’re in the park, you may also want to soak up the history here, as the area was home to the Cherokee.
Cheaha Falls
This three-tiered cascading waterfall is found in the Cheaha Forest. This area of Alabama is truly a nature lover’s paradise. Found in Talladega National Forest, not only find this stunning waterfall but also the tallest mountain in Alabama, Mount Cheaha. A short and pleasant hike is required to reach the falls. Chewacla Falls
This waterfall near Auburn is found in Chewacla State Park. Chewacla Falls is 30 feet high and is formed by the Chewacla Dam. This state park isn’t just home to this stunning waterfall but also 700 acres of forest and a 26-acre lake. This area makes for a perfect day trip from Auburn.
Welti Falls
Found in Central Alabama in the small town of Welti, Welti Falls are found below Forest Ingram Lake. This waterfall is accessible via a pleasant half-mile hike along Brindley Creek. Grace's High Falls
At 133 feet high, Grace’s High Falls is one of the tallest falls in the state and on this list. It is actually the third highest waterfall in Alabama. This breathtaking waterfall found in Little River Canyon National Preserve is seasonal, so if you want to see it in all its glory, you’ll want to visit it during the wet season. Within 10 miles from DeSoto Falls, you can visit both waterfalls in a day if you’re feeling ambitious.
Peavine Falls
Oak Mountain State Park is home to Peavine Falls. This area of Alabama is perfect for a day trip from Birmingham since the park is only 30 minutes from the city. This 65-foot waterfall is reached through a number of different hiking trails or directly through the Peavine Falls Trail. After a hike here, you can take advantage of the swimming pool found below the falls. Since this is a spring-fed waterfall, the water will be cold yet refreshing after a rigorous hike.
