Emma Crawford Coffin Races, Manitou Springs
This unique Halloween event that occurs in Manitou Springs takes you to an eventful race on the streets of the city. Known as Emma Crawford Coffin Races, participants in the race dress up in costumes and race down Manitou Avenue in a coffin. The race is in honor of Emma Crawford, a pianist who traveled to the city in 1889 looking to cure her tuberculosis using the natural mineral waters found there. Sadly, Emma died two years later, but her spirit lives on in the Emma Crawford Coffin Races. Seventy teams typically participate in the race and compete for the chance to win the fastest time, best coffin, and best team. Even if you don’t intend to participate, feel free to watch the races and parade along the sidelines.
