Dahlonega is known for having had one of the biggest gold rushes in the United States, and much of the town has been built around this historical time. Museums and landmarks are everywhere to be found, but what likely allures people to this mountain town are the beautiful surroundings, outdoor activities, home cooking and just an all-around snuggly feel. When coming to this amazing portion of northern Georgia, you’ll have a list of authentic inns and cabins to choose from, not just big-name hotels. So while there aren’t towering establishments to choose from, these simplistic mountain escapes have everything you need to really experience this area.
The Smith House
A Dahlonega tradition, the Smith House is known not only for its historic lodging but delicious southern cuisine. When staying at the hotel, a true Georgia meal awaits you in the dining area—famous cinnamon rolls, fried chicken, green beans, corn, potatoes—it’s all there. Accommodations are welcoming, like any southern home, but there’s a touch of sleekness from the modernized bathrooms. Fun fact: the building sits on top of one of the most lucrative gold mines of the city’s famed gold rush, and it can be seen through a viewing window.
Twenty Seven on Park
Right on the historic square, Twenty-Seven on Park is steps from shopping and dining. Throughout the year, festivals and events are held downtown, so this would be an optimal place to stay during those times. With undeniable homelike charm, rooms have a clean cut, fresh feel with wood-style flooring and updated bathroom fixtures. The exterior is quaint—what you would expect in a little mountain town. Keep in mind there is not an elevator, but it is only a couple of stories anyway. Enjoy perks like free wine, coffee and true hospitality.
The Dahlonega Square Hotel and Villas
Whether you stay in one of the villas or rooms in this historic hotel, you’ll be met with a lovely stay and cozy amenities. Plenty of 1800s ambiance is woven through the establishment, from hand-carved bars to chandeliers. Downtown is within walking distance, but you may find it hard to leave this beautiful property, especially now that there is a wine tour and tasting room. A breakfast basket put together by a local business is available upon request and can include everything from scones, yogurt, fresh fruit, coffee and juice. Boutique touches are everywhere.
Barefoot Hills
A refined cabin retreat along the outskirts of town, Barefoot Hills is the best of both worlds. It sits among the foliage, which is particularly vibrant in the fall, along with hiking trails and other natural landscapes. However, the food and shopping scene isn’t far away, so you can enjoy a meal and wine tasting, then retreat to your little oasis. Perhaps the most unique option to book is an adorable eco cabin made out of recycled materials such as shipping containers. Providing just enough space, it’s so romantic for couples.
Old Storehouse Inn
With just a handful of upstairs rooms to accommodate guests, this is one of those places that will stick in your memory. On the first level, you’ll find an art gallery featuring beautiful pieces, while the rest of the 1800s-constructed dwelling feels so incredibly comfortable and welcoming. You just can’t find this level of love in a big-name, swanky hotel. Everything is really nice, from the linens to the basic, warm decor—somehow all too fitting for Dahlonega.
Hall House Hotel
Poster beds, claw foot tubs and a true southern design all accent the hotel’s rich history as the second oldest building within the square. Back in the day, it served as an elaborate home and boarding house, but now welcomes guests to stay in the conveniently located establishment. Onsite you’ll also find Bourbon Street Grille and a mesmerizing art gallery—perfect additions to your stay.
Lily Creek Lodge
With eye-catching curb appeal, the Lilly Creek Lodge has a precious Alpine look on the outside and a homey feel on the inside. A stone fireplace warms the center of the lodge, and the rooms are simple yet inviting. Outside there’s an updated, naturalistic pool surrounded by stone and fixated with water features—it’s a wonderful place to lounge and enjoy the property. Breakfast is stellar, with melt-in-your-mouth pastries, quiches and other delicacies to round out the hearty meal—the atmosphere in either the French-inspired dining room or outside gazebo enhances the experience.
Mountain Top Lodge
Located in the hills of the North Georgia Mountains, this place truly has that mountain feel, with a wood-burning stove and cedar walls. Rooms’ ambiance with antique furniture reminiscent of the past and plenty of porch space means you can drink in that crisp, fresh air all day. Swings and other nooks for secluded relaxation are dotted throughout the beautiful surrounding property.
