Tryon Palace, a Georgian-style structure that was built in 1770, served as the first permanent capitol building for the state of North Carolina. It saw the very first sessions of the state’s general assembly and housed the state governors for nearly 25 years. After a devastating fire in 1798, the building and grounds were fully restored and it now serves as an educational and historical site. In addition to touring the Governor’s Palace, visitors can also tour the other historic homes on the site including the Dixon House, Stanly House and Hay House, as well as tour the gardens and visit the North Carolina History Center, which features rotating exhibits, waterfront dining, shopping and interactive historical activities.
