Don’t let the name fool you—Skinny Dip Falls in North Carolina isn’t just for midnight rendezvous. The natural reservoir is the perfect swimming and sun-soaking spot for visitors of all ages. And, contrary to its namesake, the Skinny Dip Falls is not clothing-optional. There’s so much natural beauty from the rocky terrain and a rejuvenating experience from the waters below.
Located just off of the Blue Ridge Parkway, in the Pisgah National Forest, you’ll find the trailhead for Skinny Dip Falls at the Looking Glass Rock Overlook. This breathtaking spot is located at mile marker 417 on the Parkway and offers an amazing view at 3,970 feet.
From the milepost, it’s just a short ½ mile hike down the Mountains-to-Sea Trail to get to the falls. Although the trail has a few rocks to climb, it is accessible for most ability levels. At the end of the trail, you’ll find a bench to rest on and observe the view, or take the short staircase leading down to the swimming hole to take it all up close.
If you want to get right in the action, there are several pools to swim and wade in, and even a rock you can jump off that lands into a six-foot-deep pool. However, there isn’t a lifeguard on duty, so you do have to swim at your own risk. It’s always best to take swimming lessons and be as comfortable as possible before diving into any body of water.
Remember, this is also one of the most popular spots in the area during the summertime. So, make sure to visit early in the morning to avoid the crowds. Make sure to plan the right itinerary for a refreshing North Carolina summer with peak season between March and May as well as ideal weather throughout the season.
