The Sonoran-Style hot dog appeared in the 1980s in Hermosillo and quickly gained popularity across the border into Arizona. Now, Tucson and Phoenix are the hotspots for Sonoran dogs with hundreds of Sonoran Hotdog master chefs in the area. In Tucson alone, over 200 Dogueros serve these puppies up.
While there are sure to be variances from vendor to vendor, you can expect a bacon-wrapped grilled hotdog nestled in a fluffy roll, topped with beans, tomatoes, onions, mayo, and mustard on top. A little roasted or grilled pepper typically comes alongside. Bolillo bread has a soft center, and sometimes a light crust on the outer edges. A slit is made on top to create a pocket for the bacon weenie and is quite effective in keeping all the tasty ingredients inside.
Notable places to start on your hotdog-tasting journey include El Güero Canelo, Nogales Hot Dogs, Aqui Con El Nene, BK Carne Asada & Hot Dogs, or Kiki’s Sonoran Hotdogs.
