The Azores

The Azores can be reached with just a four-hour flight from America’s east coast, but these nine volcanic islands feel like worlds away. They sit at the midway point between the old and new world, offering a paradoxical experience: wild yet tame, historic yet modern. The remoteness of the archipelago has left the culture relatively untouched. Without being overrun by tourists, visitors can often enjoy the opportunity to spend the day soaking in natural warm pools that are actually water-filled volcanic craters with the locals and then end up drinking local wine with the very man who filled the bottles.
