Planning an overseas vacation is exciting, but all that effort can turn to dust if you’re refused entry at the border because you have the wrong visa. Some travelers think they’ve done everything right, only to discover at the last minute that they’ve been scammed and their visa isn’t valid. Online visa scams are common, and travelers need to watch out for impostor government sites and fake visa service providers.
This guide directs travelers to legitimate government links, outlines tourist visa requirements for over 140 countries, and highlights signs of a fake site. We mainly cover tourist visas, also known as visitor visas in some countries.

Visa essentials for tourists
Before looking at tourist visas of individual countries, here’s a quick breakdown of what they are. Keep in mind that each country has different rules and terminology, so this is a simple overview.
A tourist visa can have many names, including visitor visa, travel visa, holiday visa, short-stay visa, or long-stay visa, to name a few. But they all generally refer to a visa that allows a foreigner to enter a country and stay for a limited period, usually for tourism or visiting friends and family. In most cases, you’re not allowed to work on this type of visa.
A tourist visa can be for a single entry or multiple entries. It also has a validity period and a stay duration, which is how long you can stay each trip. These two aren’t always the same. For example, a multiple-entry visa may be valid for one year but only allow 30-day visits at a time.
Tourist or visitor visa types
- Standard or paper-based visa: This is the visa you get when you apply at the destination country’s embassy or consulate and is usually a sticker or stamp in your passport. It may sometimes be referred to as a consular visa.
- E-visa: A digital visa linked to your passport. Your passport needs to be machine-readable to be eligible for this type of visa. In some countries, an e-visa is the digital form of a standard visa and has the same rules. In others, an e-visa is a different type of visa from the standard.
- Visa On Arrival (VOA): A visa issued at international airports and border entry points, and may have different rules than an e-visa or a standard visa.
Depending on the destination country’s rules, your passport may be ineligible for an e-visa or VOA, and your only option is to apply at the nearest embassy or consulate. These types of applications may require an interview and usually take longer to process. If there is no diplomatic post in your state, you may need to mail your application and travel for an interview. In general, fees and processing times will differ between standard visas, e-visas, and VOAs.
Visa-free or visa-waiver agreements
Most countries have bilateral agreements that allow people of select nationalities to enter visa-free for a certain amount of time. Instead of a visa, travelers can enter with:
- An electronic travel authorization (ETA): An ETA is not a visa, but is a digital pre-travel authorization used for border control and immigration checks. It’s easy to apply for, fast to process, usually inexpensive, and allows short stays.
- A passport: Travelers can enter a country with a valid passport, provided they satisfy the entry requirements. Some countries allow entry with a national ID card instead of passports under free movement agreements.
When applying for a visa, you will need to provide some or all of the following:
- A passport that’s valid for at least 6 months from the start of the trip
- A blank page for a sticker or stamp (for consular visa)
- Proof of onward travel
- Proof of accommodation bookings
- Proof of sufficient funds for the whole duration of stay
- Passport photos
- Proof of vaccination, such as yellow fever, Hepatitis A/B, and polio
- A medical certificate
- Travel insurance that covers medical expenses for a minimum amount
- Your biometric data
You may also need a transit visa in certain countries. This is a short-term visa that allows you to pass through or stay for a short time (typically one to four days) in the country before leaving for another country.
More countries are also using digital arrival or landing cards to speed up immigration. You can complete these forms online, usually a few days before your arrival. Some destinations also charge a tourist or entry fee, which is collected at the airport or border entries.
Apart from having the right entry authorization, countries will have additional requirements at the point of entry. Common requirements include showing evidence of a specific vaccination (yellow fever is common) or declaring food, medicine, and large amounts of cash. Remember that having the right visa doesn’t always guarantee entry.

Africa
Northern Africa (Morocco, Egypt) and southern and southeastern Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa) offer a deeply rich culture and unforgettable wildlife encounters. Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda offer a joint tourist visa called the East African Tourist Visa that allows entry into all three countries.
E-visas are also becoming increasingly common in this region. Visa processing times may be longer during Ramadan in Islamic countries. Common entry requirements include yellow fever vaccination, declaration of large amounts of cash, and restrictions on wildlife products.

Europe
There are two distinct visa requirements for travel in Europe: the Schengen Area under a unified visa called Schengen Visa for short stays, and non-Schengen countries with their own short-stay visas. Check the visas you will need (or won't) when planning your itinerary to avoid entry refusals at the border.
The Schengen Area and Schengen visa
The Schengen Agreement guarantees free movement for EU citizens, residents, tourists, and anyone in the Schengen Area, which comprises 29 European countries or Schengen member states.
The EU also has visa-free agreements with 61 countries. Citizens of many countries, including the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Australia, and Japan, can stay visa-free in the Schengen Area for a maximum of 90 days within a 180-day period.
What’s a Schengen visa?
If your country is not visa-exempt, you’ll need a Schengen visa to enter the Schengen Area. A Schengen visa is a short-stay visitor visa, with a stay duration of 90 days within a 180-day period. The 180-day clock starts the moment you enter the Schengen Area, and the 90-day limit is cumulative, not consecutive.
Schengen visa types and cost
A Schengen visa has three types:
- Single-entry: Enter only once.
- Multiple-entry: Enter multiple times.
- Transit visa: Required for certain nationalities transiting through an airport within the Schengen Area. The exact rules depend on the country where the airport is located.
The cost of a Schengen visa is:
- $104 (€90) for adults
- $52 (€45) for children aged 6-12
- $41 (€35) for citizens of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Belarus
- $78 (€67,50) for citizens of Cabo Verde.
Fees are the same for single or multiple entries. Note that you will need to pay additional fees if you apply through a third-party visa service center.
Where and when to apply for a Schengen visa
You’ll need to apply for a visa at the consulate of the Schengen country you’ll spend the most time in. If you’re spending an equal number of days in each country, apply at the consulate of the first country you’ll visit. Apply at least 15 days before departure and no more than six months in advance.
Long stays in the Schengen Area
All tourists who wish to stay longer than 90 days (cumulatively) will need a different visa. Most Schengen member states offer a long-term visitor visa (usually called Type D), and the rules and eligibility vary per country. Best to consult your nearest embassy or consulate.
We’ve linked the official websites of each country’s ministry of foreign affairs or immigration department for more information. Some of these links are not in English, so you might need to click on translate in your browser if it didn’t translate the page automatically.

Authorized third-party partners
Some governments outsource parts of the visa application process to third‑party providers to manage visa applications and consular services. However, they are only allowed to handle non-judgmental or admin tasks.
Government officers still manage interviews, assess and decide on applications, and manage appeals. Be careful of providers who claim they can guarantee approvals.
Third-party partners typically provide services such as:
- Managing and tracking a visa application
- Helping set visa appointments and interviews
- Collecting and checking biometric data and documents
- Returning processed passports
Major third-party visa operators are:
- VFS Global: Works with over 70 governments and operates in 167 countries, and is considered the largest visa outsourcing provider.
- BLS International: Works with over 46 client governments and operates in 70 countries.
- TLScontact: Has over 140 visa application centres across Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and Africa.

Tips to protect yourself from visa scams
When you’re trying to verify a visa website, check the URL for misspellings and odd domains, and make sure there’s a little padlock icon. Avoid clicking on URLs from sponsored ads in search results, as scammers often pay to appear at the top.
A good habit is to cross-check the site with official foreign affairs or immigration websites. Legitimate visa platforms or service providers are usually linked or mentioned there. You can also start from official sources instead. Go to an official embassy or ministry website and click on the e‑visa links.
If you’re using a third‑party service or agent, make sure they’re recognized by relevant authorities. Many countries publish lists of approved providers. Additionally, read reviews and testimonials from several sources to verify the provider.
As a general rule, don’t enter passport numbers, credit card details, or biometrics unless you’re absolutely confident the platform is legit. Avoid sharing passwords, card details, or sensitive information in emails and chats.
Use a credit card because its fraud protection is stronger than debit cards. Keep your receipts and confirmation numbers, as they will help resolve issues and dispute charges if something goes wrong.
Book ahead with official providers
Getting a tourist or visitor visa isn’t usually complicated, but it’s best not to leave it to the last minute. Falling for visa scams is easier when you’re in a rush and stressed. Always stick to official sources and authorized visa providers for e-visas. Contact the nearest embassy or consulate of your destination country when in doubt.
A good tip is to subscribe to travel advisories and official tourism boards for the latest update on visa requirements. Double check that you’re not overstaying your visa, especially if you’re traveling to several countries. Staying informed and being vigilant will save you a lot of stress when it’s time to pack your bags and get on that flight.
