there are an abundance of pristine beaches in South America where epic waves can be caught:
1. Miramar, Argentina
Featuring year-round surf seasons, Miramar’s swells are some of the best in South America.
2. Pratigi, Bahia
Some of the best breaks with tons of tubes can be found in Pratigi. The beach is usually empty which is an added plus if you’re not into crowds.
3. Pitangueras (Maluf), Brazil
A year-round east swell that’s slightly better during the winter months attracts locals and visitors to Pitangueras. This South American surfing destination is ideal for beginners.
4. Joaquina Beach, Brazil
A favorite for locals and for ASP surfing competitions, Joaquina Beach offers a powerful beachbreak with wave consistency ideal for the intermediate surfer.
5. Arpoador, Rio de Janeiro
A local star that produces decent waves that are ideal for beginners, Arpoador, though sometimes crowded, offers plenty of beachbreaks for fun.
6. Tamarindo, Guanacaste, Costa Rica
Once a quiet fishing town, today Tamarindo is a prime surf destination that attracts visitors from around the world.
7. Mal Pais – Santa Teresa, Nicoya Penninsula, Costa Rica
An exceptional surf spot, Malpais is considered by many to be a surfer’s paradise.
8. Playa Avellana, Guanacaste, Costa Rica
Featuring waves that span up to 18-feet, Playa Avellana is a challenging surf zone for even the intermediate or professional surfer—but there’s plenty of fun to be had in the exceptional offshore breaks.
9. Mar del Plata, Argentina
Bustling with surf schools and cool waves, Mar del Plata is a prime surf spot for beginners. Featuring areas of beach hat are rocky bottom as well as areas with sandy bottom, Mar del Plata’s variety of breaks make for an exciting day.
10. Salinas, Ecuador
Previously the site of the ISA World Junior Surfing Games in 2009, Salinas offers up both right and left points as well as beachbreaks that are best during December, January, February and March.
11. Mompiche, Ecuador
A December to April high season attracts avid surfers but Mompiche is mostly a secluded beach otherwise. Lef-point breaks are mostly contingent on the large north swells so pay close attention because there are days when the water here is completely flat.
